La Calaverita de Dulce

La calaverita de dulce, is a skull candy that is bought to put in your alter for Día De Los Muertos (day of the dead) in México. It’s just a sweet candy made of pure sugar cane, that is melted until creating a caramel consistency and from there they work the caramel like consistency until it forms a doe like effect and its mold able. After its decorated with colorful flowers and lines to brighten the skull and make it look more festive for the happy day. I created this skull in honor of those childhood memories of eating those candy skulls that melted in one bite.

Conebujo

Here I give you my conebujo. He/She is an Alebrije. Which is a mixture of two or various animals creating a magical creature. They are magical creatures that are spirit guides for the Aztec realm. Growing up in Mexico you here a lot of tails involving Alebrijes, specially if El Dia De Los Muertos is nearby.

My conebujo is a mixture of a butterfly (on the wings), owl (the body) and a bunny (the ears and feet), hints the name in spanish “cone” for conejo (bunny), and “bujo” for buo (owl).

La Catrina

There is no more elegant death representation like the one México gives. La Catrina it’s the symbol of the death and the icon of the day of the death . The great Madame of the Death was created by José Guadalupe Posada in 1912. It started as a cartoon of a smiling Victorian skeleton lavished in riches laughing at death. And now we celebrate her as the icon that she has become with the same respect and elegance that we give death when we all part. As a big part of my life I decided to recreate her. Since I was little I’ve always admire the people that would take their time to become her just for a day or two. As most costumes require a year or years to prepare.

Quetzacoatl

La Serpiente Emplumada ( the snake with feathers). The great Quetzacoatl is an Aztec god that contributed to the creation of knowledge and the great all being. He is a reptilian with bird qualities. He is able to fly from different realms throw out the earth and the sky. He is one of my favorite Aztec Gods.
